Great video! I just started working on the kick a few days ago. I am beginning to see a pretty consistent high topspin bounce, but I’m struggling to get the ball to make that nice jump out to the left (I’m a lefty). Looks like your racquet face is pointed more to the left than mine is. I’ll try to work on that.

Or just stand a bit more over to the left?!

This is best instruction on elbowing enemy to create natural power instead of pretending to drop the racquet with wrong set up in the first place. It worked well for me

I have been playing and winning with a slice FH for 40 years. You can't get the full benefit of the slice FH until you learn to follow through with a wrist snap. Some day I'll make a video

Thanks for a good video. It was helpful to learn about the hitting off the back foot on those short balls as I always come in with the lead foot. Will practice this today. Thanks again. Reggie.

Gosh! I discovered your channel today and this precisely has been one of the most challenging topic on my game after 1.5y of practice. When beginner/interm, you tend to think 'topspin = rushing my wrist/arm when at contact point' except it's all wrong bc it makes your trajectory be either downward or straight, when all we want is UP. I'm currently trying to relax my wrist as much as I can and have the perfect timing in order to have the right margin to hit on the sweetspot as well, having a nice and smooth forehand, with adequate preperation. The key is to stop trying to hit a winner on every ball haha. Thanks a lot for that video!

I like a bit more the video "Should you pause during your serve motion" from Performance-Plus tennis, which accepts well the 2 options "fluid / pause".

Great tuition and demonstration Jeff thanks the issue for me is to not do a waiters tray serve when I don’t by having a Roddick type take back I struggle to do anything but a flat serve. Problem with that is in doubles if I miss my first serve I can bottle my second serve as fine margins. Anyway off to the court to practice kick and topspin serve with no waiter element. Thanks again.

Looks like you still have some pre roll (early supination/external rotation) with this backswing. A lot of it goes back to the Chrissie takeback we were taught back in the day. Step forward, left hand forward, right hand back setting the racquet face square to the ball. The problem with pre roll is that you don’t get as much of a sharp flip back since you’ve already done a portion of it slowly before the racquet begins moving forward. Focusing only on a shorter backswing can be counterproductive.

I find I usually put my thumb up on the handle (like giving a thumbs-up) for my forehands. It feels right, and I guess I got used to it, but I'm sure it's holding me back now. I also bend my wrist way back up (I think, due to my thumb position). Is this totally wrong? Otherwise, I have what others tell me is wicked spin on the ball, it skips when it hits the ground; of course I'm doing the "windshield wiper" technique, although I don't think I hit with a lot of power... I'm confused, though, about whether I need to change my grip.

What about the (one handed) backhand index finger position? Personally, for the forehand I'm using the same grip you showed as correct, but for the backhand kinda "wrong" grip you showed with the closed fingers including index: that could be ok for the backhand or still to avoid?

I wish that you are not so absolute about saying that the pinpoint stance is undesirable. As a person who has gone from pinpoint to platform, and now back to pinpoint, there are plenty of reasons to do so. while I enjoy the easier accuracy that comes with a platform serve, there is a noticeable difference in pace with a pinpoint stance according to my opponents. Also, at 52 years old, the burst required in the platform is harder to keep up after a set or 2 of singles play.

Her serve is a little funky and you raise some good points. But when you say it's rare to see a pro struggle with that back foot stepping to the side, have you taken a look at some of the best pinpointers (primarily male)? I wonder how it could be so wrong when Ivanisevic, Rusedski, Serena Williams, Berrettini, Zverev, Medvedev, Wawrinka, Janowicz, Rublev, Safin, and the list goes on and on. Any ideas?
